Write First Blog Post: Check

Okay, first off, figuring out what the heck your first blog post should be about is really hard. On one hand, you don't want to be too cliché and write a "Welcome to My Blog" or "Here's an Introduction About Me." But on the other hand, you need something to let people know who you are and what your blog is going to be about, right?

Anyway, I didn't really make a decision on what this first post was going to entail until I started writing. And what did I decide? Not to make it your typical introduction. You're welcome. ;)

Why do you do what you do? - Part 1

When I started my previous job (a marketing coordinator for a structural engineering firm), the company had just started working on a strategic plan. As part of that process, they were updating the company's vision and mission statements. There was a lot of work involved, but what stuck out to me during the process was that it all started with a "why." That "why" is what will guide the company in all of its decisions (so it's kind of a big deal).

It really got me thinking about my "why." Why do I want to pursue photography? Why weddings or families or seniors? Why do these things matter to me?

Everyone has different talents and abilities. Some people are extremely gifted in sports or music. Some people are natural-born leaders, and some are really good at encouraging others. Sometimes it takes a while to figure out what you're good at. And sometimes it takes someone else telling you what you're good at to know what that thing is. But whatever it is and however you find it – it's not meant for you to keep for yourself. I believe we each have different talents so that we can bless other people.

If you follow me on Instagram, you've seen that an important part of my life is my faith. My faith also plays a big part in why I'm a photographer. You see, not only do I believe we each have different talents, but I believe these talents are gifts from God. And perfecting/refining those gifts and using them to bless others is a form of praise back to Him.

So really, photography, for me, is a way to serve – giving people the opportunity to look back on specific moments and feel the joy that was present that day. It's a way for me to live for God and praise Him for the gifts he has given me.

The foundation of why I do what I do is really pretty simple. The rest builds from there.

Stay tuned. =)
